Eye Exams

What happens at an eye exam?

The main purpose of an eye exam is to evaluate your vision, eye health, and eye function. The team at Stockdale Optometry begins by discussing your medical history, family history, and any concerns you have about your vision.

The team tests your vision with visual acuity tests such as reading an eye chart. If your vision is blurry, they prescribe corrective lenses (eyeglasses or contact lenses). Tests to evaluate your eye health can include using a bright light to visually inspect your eyes and eyelids. The team may dilate your pupils to look inside your eyes.

To test the function of your eyes, the team checks your peripheral vision, depth perception, and more. They examine the strength of your eye muscles and how your eyes work together to help you see clearly.

What is eye care co-management?

The Stockdale Optometry team is proud to offer patients convenient co-management of common eye procedures, including LASIK and cataract surgery. With co-management, your Stockdale Optometry optometric physician provides recommendations, referrals, and pre- and post-operative appointments to ensure a seamless transition of care.

LASIK

Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, or LASIK, is an extremely common laser procedure to correct a variety of eye conditions. If you’re interested in LASIK, the Stockdale Optometry team can help you determine if you’re a good candidate for the procedure. The team offers LASIK evaluations and can recommend a surgery center if LASIK is right for you.

Cataract surgery

Cataracts affect nearly 90% of people over the age of 65. The optometric physicians at Stockdale Optometry can diagnose cataracts and make recommendations for a cataract surgeon who meets your needs. The team offers pre- and post-operative care for cataract patients.

How often do I need an eye exam?

Regular eye exams are the best way to identify any potential threats to your quality of vision. Many common eye conditions, like glaucoma and cataracts, develop slowly. These conditions can lead to vision loss and blindness if left untreated, but early detection often means successful treatment.

Everyone is unique, and the guidelines your optometric physician gives you vary depending on your eyes, any preexisting conditions, and your age. If you wear glasses or contacts or you’re at risk for developing certain eye conditions like diabetic retinopathy, you may need more frequent exams.

In general, children have their first eye exam as early as 6 months old. Then, they should get their eyes checked again before they enter school. School-age children generally need an eye exam every two years.

Adults ages 18-60 should get a comprehensive eye exam at least once every two years. People over 60 should have an annual eye exam. With age comes increased risk of eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and more.
